Be a hero by volunteering

The South African Riding for the Disabled Association’s (Sarda) Gauteng branch is always in need of volunteers to assist them with disabled children.

A non-profit organisation in Ruimsig require the assistance of the community to be able to continue being of service to disabled children.

The South African Riding for the Disabled Association’s (Sarda) Gauteng branch recently celebrated their 30th year of providing horse therapy to about nine schools on the West Rand and hope to continue doing so for many years to come.

Julia Morris, Sarda’s fundraiser, said because they rely solely on public donations and their own fundraising endeavours they are always in need of volunteers to help them make a difference.

“Volunteers are the heartbeat of our organisation and without them we will not be able to operate and survive.”

She emphasised that no previous experience is needed as ongoing training will be provided.

“Lessons will commence soon and without volunteers our children are deprived of their therapy sessions. Therefore it is vitally important for us always to have enough volunteers to assist us.”

Morris said they have two schools in the morning where the children would ride for an hour. The disabilities some of the children face include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, autism, foetal alcohol syndrome, mental retardation, visual and hearing impairment as well as genetic disorders.

“As a gesture we will provide our volunteers with the adequate recognition and acknowledgement for being of service to us.”

Sarda also needs the helping hand of local businesses in the community and asks them to donate to them on a monthly basis.

“The businesses will be recognised and will be provided with a Section 18 certificate as we are registered as a Section 18 company. We therefore ask our community to help us by putting the able back into disable.”

As part of Sarda’s own continuous fundraising endeavours there will be a ladies brunch on 24 January from 9.30am to 1pm at Usambara.
