Krugersdorp shoppers are urged to take caution after an alleged card-cloning incident at a local shopping centre.
Deluan van Vuuren told the news how he believes he was distracted at a shop where his card possibly was cloned.
At first Van Vuuren did not take much notice when the clerk was busy with his card underneath the counter while the other shop assistant made small talk and badmouthed the company.
Van Vuuren claimed while he was distracted by the complaining shop assistant, the clerk doing the transaction ‘struggled’ to take out a plastic bag from under the counter while she still had his card.
He has reason to believe the two were in cahoots as they spoke to each other in their mother tongue at the time.
Coincidentally, Van Vuuren received a sms alert from his bank the following morning that a transaction was made at Edgars in the East Rand Mall, while he was in Krugersdorp at the time.
When contacting his bank to stop the card and reverse the transaction, his bank confirmed the last time he used the card was at a local shopping centre and it could have been cloned there.
It is believed that after Van Vuuren had laid a complaint at the particular shop, the shop assistant was reprimanded and the clerk is being watched closely.
Richard Fuller, Game Store Operations Director responded to the allegations as follows: “Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.
“Unfortunately card fraud is a reality in society and we definitely will investigate this internally and take the necessary steps that arise from it.”
