The national police are busy investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a baby in Kagiso following another looting incident on Friday, 23 January.
Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale said it is still unclear whether the mother was one of the looters.
“Looters were scattered when police arrived when they were busy robbing a spaza shop.”
He said the mob ran into the mother who was carrying her baby.
The baby was certified dead on the scene by paramedics after the baby fell and was trampled on by the fleeing mob.
Makgale said a case of murder was opened.
A further 24 people were arrested on Friday night, according to other news reports following the violence and looting of foreign national owned shops.
In another incident on Friday a woman, 46, was arrested for being in the possession of alleged stolen looted goods worth thousands of rands.
Solomon Sibiya, Kagiso Police spokesperson said they received the tip off while patrolling and monitoring the looting situation of foreigners’ shops.
The suspect was allegedly a neighbour to the spaza shop.
