To those who cringe when we say Valentine’s Day

Can Valentine's Day be what you need to save you relationship?

Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Some are starting to prepare by making reservations at The Diner at the Anthos shopping centre (wink-wink) and others are ordering bouquets of red roses. Either way, it’s coming.

Then there are those who we often forget about: the unhappy ones in a relationship or marriage that dread Valentine’s Day. To them, making an effort or celebrating a union is simply not an option anymore.

All too often we give up on love. Especially when we have found it before.

According to Statistics South Africa, the 28 per cent increase in divorce in 2013 on top of the almost 22 000 divorces out of 165 000 marriages in 2012, sends a loud and clear message.

All too seldom we try to make our relationships work.

If you are afraid of being single again, use this Valentine’s Day as your rescuer instead of avoiding it like the plague. Do as St Valentine would have done during the third century in Rome and encourage love and marriage despite what was then a demanding trend of defiance against civil unions.

Here are some heartfelt tips from Bruce Muzik from Love At First Fight (www.loveatfirstfight.com):

• Acknowledge your marriage/ relationship is going through a tough time.

• Find the core problem and seek advice or guidance on how to fix it.

• Take two minutes away from each other when you start to fight, then hold your partner’s hand in silence for two minutes thereafter.

• Reconnect with your partner so that you once again may experience the initial romance stage

From the team at the news, we wish you a successful and joyous 14 February as we also try to take our own advice.

Let us know how Valentine’s Day saved your marriage/ relationship in the comments section below. We would love to hear from you!
