Krugersdorp SPCA to close its doors

The SPCA is closing its doors because there is no support.

The Krugersdorp SPCA is set to close its doors permanently.

This is the second organisation in Krugersdorp which has suffered from a lack of financial support.

The News contacted the SPCA’s spokesperson, Jolene Beyleveld who confirmed the allegations.

A press release issued to the News stated that the Johannesburg SPCA will close its Krugersdorp branch on 31 March.

“It is simply not viable to operate a branch in Krugersdorp when there are large and fully operational facilities at the Johannesburg SPCA in the suburb of Reuven,” states Beyleveld.

The Krugersdorp branch has been under management of the Johannesburg SPCA since 2009, both operational as well as financial.

“The closure of the premises was not a quick or easy decision. It was made with a long-term view, taking into account the current and projected economic situation. The priority is ensuring the best provision for the care of animals,” says Beyleveld.

The Johannesburg SPCA will take over the responsibilities of the Krugersdorp area with regards to inspections, investigations of cruelty and neglect and the collection of stray or unwanted animals.

“As an additional measure to ensure that no animal suffers as a result of this restructuring, the Johannesburg SPCA commits to arranging for inspectors to visit what will then be the premises of the former Krugersdorp branch to ensure that no animals have been left there,” commits Beyleveld.

A notice regarding the closure of the branch will soon be placed outside of the Krugersdorp SPCA.

Residents with urgent emergencies will be urged to make use of the neigbouring SPCA’s in Randburg and Roodepoort.

“There are also other animal welfare organisations in the area to take in unwanted animals,” states Beyleveld.

An organisation such as the SPCA is a community-driven force which is over and above dependent on local residents for financial support.

“Sadly, this has not been the case in the Krugersdorp area. This has been the situation for a considerable period of time.”
