Residents are urged to be more cautious as there is a new ATM scam doing the rounds in Krugersdorp.
It would seem that criminals have found a smart way of targeting their victims, as they now target people who withdraw money at banks and ATMs.
“When the victim has finished withdrawing money inside the bank or at the ATM, the criminals follow the person around,” said Constable Tshepiso Mashale, spokesperson for the Krugersdorp SAPS.
Suspects distract the victims by dropping a parcel on the ground, without their noticing. They then approach the victim and convince him or her that there might be money inside and that they should go to a quiet corner and share the money before anyone else notices it.
Around the corner, the suspect’s accomplices wait for the victim.
“The suspects then rob the victim of his or her money, wallet and cards, and have gone as far as demanding the cards’ pin codes.”
Residents are urged to check their surroundings when withdrawing money.
“Please be careful when you come across these kinds of people at the ATMs. Be alert and call the police if you suspect anything.”
