Suspect commits suicide in holding cells

A man, who was expected to make a brief appearance in the Krugersdorp Magistrates' Court, was found dead in the holding cells.

A 46-year-old man allegedly committed suicide on Monday morning (2 March) whilst in police custody.

Sergeant Thsepiso Mashale, a police spokesperson at the Krugersdorp Police Station confirmed the incident and said that he hanged himself, apparently with a belt.

He was expected to make a brief appearance in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court facing charges for alleged drug use.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) is investigating the matter, Mashale said.

In a separate incident in October last year, a woman believed to be a prostitute, was also found dead in the holding cells at the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court in an apparent suicide attempt.

It was believed that she hung herself with her shoelaces, also on a Monday morning.

She was due to appear before the court on charges of loitering and possession of drugs.
