Do the can, can for charity
A resident from Krugersdorp saw that the South African actor Ivan Zimmerman is cycling through Africa in a bid to collect cans of non-perishable food for underprivileged children.
A South African actor is less than 800km away from reaching Cape Town, the end of his 12 000km bicycle tour which started in Cairo, Egypt four months ago. This is all in a bid to help underprivileged children.
When Amanda Verster-Van der Merwe from Wentworth Park noticed the actor Ivan Zimmerman, a Facebook friend, is taking part in the Tour d’Afrique cycling tour with the aim of collecting 12 000 cans of non-perishable food – a can for each completed kilometer – she decided to help him in reaching his goal
“I visited his webpage to see what the project is all about. When I saw there is no collecting areas in the West Rand I contacted Ivan via Facebook to find out if I can help him by collecting cans from our area, of which he was very overwhelmed and agreed to.”
Amanda then decided to contact the News to help her by publishing an article where she appealed to the community to come on board with the project.
A total of 175 cans of food have since been collected and for this she is ever grateful.
“I am really happy about all the food that was donated, but I am still very far from reaching my goal of initial 1 000 cans. When Ivan visits me later this month I want to be able to show him that Krugesdorpers are a very caring community.”
Ivan posted a photo of himself on his Facebook-page on 3 May and wrote that he is in Springbok and that he has 800km to go before reaching Cape Town this Saturday 9 May.
“I really hope we as a community can help by making a difference in others’ lives,” Amanda said.
She concluded that she will be able to collect the canned food if it is in the proximity of the West Rand if it cannot be dropped off. For more information she can be contacted on 082 598 8258.
