Afternoon traffic was backed up as a helicopter took off from the open patch of grass opposite the Krugersdorp fire station.
Curious motorists travelling along Commissioner Street in late afternoon traffic saw a glimpse of a helicopter stationed opposite the Krugersdorp fire station.
The members of the Sector 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF) were dispatched to the open grass patch to help secure the area for a helicopter takeoff.
The CPF member’s helped by blocking off the roads to the helicopter as the takeoff may be hazardous for the public around the area.
The impact of the wind caused by the razor sharp blades can also pick up items around the helicopter and fling it in the air.
This is why when CPF members are called out for a helicopter landings, to help prepare the landing grounds by removing all hazardous items around the area.
It is also their jobs to not only keep the curious public members at a safe distance from the helicopter and assisting with the traffic flow but to also protect the identity of the patient who is transported via helicopter.
The open grass opposite the fire station is one of many other spots used in Krugersdorp for helicopter landings which also includes HoĆ«rskool Noordheuwel’s fields and most recently the open field in Robert Broom Drive.
The News understands that the CPF is constantly on the lookout for other suitable landing spaces to be used in emergencies.
It is believed that the patient transported via helicopter on 5 May, was transported directly from the theater table to the helicopter to another hospital.
Traffic was backed up for a few minutes after the helicopter took off to ensure that there was no mishaps with the takeoff and for safety reasons.
