Gauteng nurses celebrates Nurses Day

About 800 nurses from around the Gauteng Province attended the event held at Chief Mogale Hall in Kagiso wearing their traditional white uniforms.

International Nurses Day on Tuesday was a day for nurses from the Gauteng Department of Health to network and learn from others.

About 800 nurses from around the Guteng Province attended the event held at Chief Mogale Hall in Kagiso wearing their traditional white uniforms.

The theme for this year’s event was A force for Change: For Care Effectiveness and Cost Effectiveness.

Dr Elizabeth Kaye-Petersen, Gauteng Department of Health Acting Chief Nursing Officer said the purpose of the event is to celebrate the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

Among dignitaries who graced the event was Gauteng MEC for Health, Qedani Mahlangu, MMC for Health in Mogale City Local Municipality, Councillor Emily Mathe, Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa President, Simon Hlungwane, West Rand District Health Director, Puleng Muso and other dignitaries.

During her speech, Mahlangu emphasised the shortage of nurses as the challenge of Department of Health.

“We should focus on recruiting more nurses and also attract men and different races as the majority of our nurses in the country are black.”

At the end of the event nurses also committed to the nurses pledge of service holding a candle light, which also states “the total health of the patient will be the priority and they will maintain the utmost respect for human life.”
