A Swanieville mother reported her own teenage son to the police after finding him to be in possession of expensive goods that could not possibly be his.
Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya, a police spokesperson at the Kagiso Police Station said the boy and a friend, both 14, were arrested on Saturday 6 June for being in possession of suspected stolen goods.
“When the police arrived they found the complainant who is the mother of one of the boys. She told police that her son was in possession of expensive goods that he could not account for.”
The goods, Sibiya said, included a silver Apple Ipad tablet, a pair of takkies and a mountain bike.
“The boy allegedly told his mother and the police the goods belonged to his friend.”
When police, accompanied by the complainant and her son, proceeded to the friend’s home they found another mountain bike. Sibiya said the suspect’s friend could also not account for the bike and both minors were arrested and taken to Bosasa Youth Rehabilitation Centre in Krugersdorp.
Brigadier Hendry Mollegai, station commander of the Kagiso Police Station praised the woman for taking action.
“If we can all adopt this mother’s attitude towards her own son, our areas can be better places to live in. She is one out of many who are honest enough to do that,” he said.
“She has not only shown great love to her son but also shown that she wants him to be a responsible citizen instead of a thug who will only bring sorrow and sadness upon his home – that boy will thank her one day.”
