A prestige banquet will be held at Usambara to celebrate the history of the club.
The Rotary Club of Krugersdorp was chartered on 4 September 1940. The first president was the late Breytie Breytenbach.
He also was well-known in Pretoria since the Breytenbach Theater was named in his honour. He was known for his drama and cultural involvement and he initiated a very active theater group in Krugersdorp. The gallery in the Centenary Hall also is named after him.
A prestige banquet will be held on 3 September at Usambara to celebrate the history of the club.
“We would like to honour our previous members and request them and deceased members’ spouses to contact the incoming president, Colin Steyn. We have many former members’ names, but some of their contact details are unknown,” Rotary member Dehlia van Staden said.
Over the years the Rotary Club of Krugersdorp has been responsible for a number of monuments, as well as:
• Golden Age Village with its 129 residents
• Memorial Flats that were built after World War II to provide accommodation for soldiers after the war
• West Rand Cripple Care (presently known as West Rand Association for Physically Disabled)
• exchange programme with the Rotary Club of Goslar in Germany
• West Rand School for disabled children
• West Rand Careers Expo, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year
• the Sterkfontein Caves Kiosk was managed by Rotarians on a voluntarily basis on behalf of Wits University until recently
• Friends of Sterkfontein programme that assists people in need when discharged from Sterkfontein Psychiatric Hospital
• provision of wheelchairs at no cost to needy recipients
• the annual Rotary Family Health Day
• the chartering of the Monument Club and a breakfast club in Roodepoort
• financial support to many institutions and individuals over the years
The Rotary Anns are Rotarian spouses. They function separately under the Rotary banner. They have their own programmes and projects but still are supported by the Rotarians.
They meet monthly at the Golden Age Village and are involved actively in various projects in Krugersdorp.
Rotary International is the biggest private foundation in the world.
