What’s up with Monument Dam’s fish?
Residents gathered, worried about the seemingly dying fishes. But it could only be because of the recent cold front.
The News received a call last night about the Carp fish in Monument Dam behaving strangely.
At different spots all over the dam, a school of fish, huddling up close to each other and rarely moving, appeared.

Schoolchildren, gym-goers and strolling residents alike all stopped and stared at the strange picture.
“In the five years I have walked past the dam, I have never seen them do this before,” said Adriaan Hudson, walking to Key West Shopping Centre from his school.
Many asked whether the fish are spawning, unable to breathe or if they are simply cold, looking to bake in the sun at the surface?
A Key West security guard said that the fish do this every year, at least for the past seven years he has been working there.
Thankfully, Stefan du Toit from Mogale City’s Environmental Affairs explained that it appears to be of natural causes, even though it is a strange phenomenon.

Amanda de Lange, a Freedom Front Plus councillor for Mogale City, was initially worried that it could be a chemical cause.
“But Du Toit said that it is not chemical. It could be because of the recent cold front we experienced. It may have caused an imbalance in the oxygen levels of the water.”
De Lange, along with Du Toit, will further investigate this occurrence and plan on moving the fishes to a comfortable area.
