Mogale City’s Executive Mayor, Councillor Koketso Calvin Seerane presented a R2,5 billion budget for the 2015/ 2016 financial year on 19 June.
Seerane said property rates, refuse collection tariffs, hall hire costs and other user charges will increase by six per cent while tariffs for water will increase by 15,5 per cent and for sanitation 12 per cent.
Tariffs for electricity will increase by 12, 2 per cet as approved by the National Energy Regulator. Residents useing prepaid electricity and more than 1 000kWh per month will pay less. Their tariff will decrease by 8,24 per cent.
“This is due to the overcharge in the previous financial year,” said Dennis Pretorius, the DA’s Mogale City financial spokesperson.
Mogale City is planning on implementing alternative energy solutions through the R10 million Munsieville Electricity Smart Grid Project and the R3,5 billion Waste-to-Energy initiative at Luipaardsvlei Landfill Site.
Mogale City further will spend:
• R6 million on relocation of the Tudor Shaft informal settlement
• R52 million to improve infrastructure in the rural areas of the city
• R33,5 million on enterprise development projects in order to boost job creation in the city
• R150 million will be spent over the next three years on improvements to roads and the storm-water network. These projects will include the widening of Robert Broom Drive
• R63 million for parks management over the next three years, which include upgrading the Kagiso Cemetery and various regional parks constructed around the city.
“The operating expenditure budget of the city is R2 593 074 with a capital budget of R293 360 million,” Seerane said.
Nkosana Zali, Mogale City spokesperson said the budget was unanimously adopted by Mogale City Local Municipality Council.
