[VIDEO] She wants you to go green

Get to know our very own Miss Earth semi-finalist and what she aims to do to make the world, and Krugersdorp, a better place.

One day she’s planting trees and another she’s teaching your children about waste management – she might even inspire someone to come up with a solution for load shedding.

Mandisa Mqolombeni is on the path of environmental awareness and South Africa’s Miss Earth finals, and she aims to make Krugersdorp a greener place.

As a recent double major graduate in Environmental Geological Sciences and Marina Biology, Mandisa found her passion for preserving the planet for future generations.

Mandisa entered Miss Earth in April and found out the following month that she is a semi-finalist. Since then it has been a constant flow of environmental projects.

On 26 June, Mandisa planted 10 trees at Silverfields Primary School and added a lecture on waste management.

“If one person recycles one glass bottle every month for one year, enough energy would be saved to light Johannesburg for an entire month,” Mandisa explained to wide-eyed children.

“I try to keep talk about recycling interesting.”

Mandisa told the News that you do not need to become a tree-hugger to make a difference. One small act of recycling a glass bottle is enough.”

If Mandisa continues on the green path, she might become a finalist and participate in Miss Earth at the end of the year in Austria.

“My next step is to visit the the SPCA along with a primary school class and some blankets.”
