Dustbins overflow after battery theft

Mogale City's refuse trucks' batteries were stolen, leaving residents furious and their dustbins overflowing.

Overflowing dustbins and black bags are decorating Krugersdorp’s streets after Mogale City’s contracted refuse removal services had been a no-show.

Angry residents took to social media to express their anger after refuse removers had failed to empty their dustbins for three days in a row.

According to the angry residents who posted on Facebook, areas such as Noordheuwel, Monument, Wentworth Park and Luipaardsvlei are effected.

Other posts on the page indicate that in some areas rubbish was removed a day later than usual.

It has been confirmed that battery theft prevented the trucks from going out. At this stage it is unclear whether services simply are delayed or on hold.

Dennis Pretorius, DA Caucus Leader of the West Rand District Municipality confirmed it is definitely not a strike.

“It is believed that the contracting company who is responsible for the removal trucks’ batteries were stolen on Monday night, hence the delay.”

The News contacted Mogale City Local Municipality’s spokesperson, Nkosana Zali for comment regarding the matter but despite three emails, a phone call and a voice mail nothing has been forthcoming.

Pretorius also confirmed that some areas have been serviced since the incident, and others will be attended to in due course.
