Facebook supports homosexual marriage, do you?

A lot of Facebook users recently changed their profile picture with a rainbow filter over it in support of same-sex marriage. What are your thoughts?

Have you wondered what the rainbow filter on Facebook users’ profile pictures mean? It’s Facebook that launched a tool allowing users show their support of marriage equality.

Facebook’s Celebrate Pride tool was announced by co-founder and chief executive Mark Zuckerberg. The tool was launched shortly after the United States Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is now considered a fundamental constitutional right guaranteed under the 14th Amendment.

By visiting the Celebrate Pride tool on Facebook, you will see a preview of your profile picture with a rainbow filter. If you click use as profile picture, then your existing profile photo will be uploaded with the rainbow filter.

The News turned to Krugersdorp and asked what your thoughts on the rainbow filter and its meaning is?

“Marriage or commitment is a scared union between two individuals. It should not be bound by any law. And that’s my celebration of that freedom,” says Dean Albertus, a business owner from Muldersdrift.

South Africa was the fifth country, the first in Africa, the first in the southern hemisphere, the first republic, and the second outside Europe to legalise same-sex marriage.

“My family and friend also changed their profile pictures with the rainbow filter in support of me being gay. I feel that you should be allowed to marry the person you love, whether it is a man or a woman,” explains Bonita Bothma from Krugersdorp.

Marnich Winterbach also support the ruling in America.

“South Africa is a third world country and we already legalised same-sex marriage. The ruling sets an example for other countries that have not yet legalised homosexual marriage.”

But not everyone is overjoyed by this news.

A local prominent minister, Pieter Fourie from the OM-G congregation who has his own Facebook page that allows Krugersdorp to interact with him, says he will never marry a homosexual couple.

“But if they can prove to me that I can from the Bible, I will.”
