Hockey girls heading to Noordvaal
Hockey teams to battle it out at the upcoming Noordvaal tournament hosted in Krugersdorp.
It would seem that hockey stars are born at Maragon Avianto Private School, as two hockey teams have made it through to the next round and a new tournament.
The under 14 and under 15 Girls’ Hockey team of Maragon has made it through to the prestigious Noordvaal tournament to be held early in August this year.
“It is an excellent achievement, as it means that both teams are ranked in the top two teams in the West Rand within the medium schools league,” Maragon Marketing Manager, Belinda Espag, said.
The under 14s had an easy run of it, as they won their league, which means they went straight through to the final round of playoffs on Saturday 13 June.
After a long rest period, the girls played off against Hoërskool Bastion, just narrowly being defeated for the top spot in the West Rand. The result, however, made no difference, as both teams are sent through to the tournament as representatives.
The under 15s had their work cut out for them this season. As the former number one hockey team in the West Rand, they started their season with flair.
Yet a number injuries and illnesses unfortunately forced them to go through to the first round of playoffs as they lost a few key games in the tournament.
They played against Hoërskool Riebeeckrand and, in a tough game, came out the victors. The next day, the girls faced off against local rivals from Krugersdorp. The girls won with four goals to none in fine style and managed to go through to the final on the same day as the under 14s. They too played off against Bastion. In the final game, the girls finished in a three all draw, which meant they had to go to a one-on-one scenario and the girls unfortunately lost. As with the under 14 team, the result did not matter and the girls also made it through regardless.
Noordvaal will take place on 6, 7 and 8 August in Noordheuwel. The girls will battle it out on the field against teams from Mpumalanga, Limpopo and neighbouring provincial bodies such as Northern Gauteng and Eastern Gauteng.
“Well done to our amazing girls’ hockey teams. You embody Maragon Pride.”
