With their smiles and their artworks lighting up the room, fifteen 21 to 28-year-old artists from Thusong Centre for the Mentally Challenged brought along their paintings to the Mogale City Museum for all to see.
“Museums are engaging more with the community through exhibitions like these,” the Mogale City Department of Heritage, Arts and Culture specialist, Godfrey Naledzani, said.
“This is an opportunity for up-and-coming artists to be exposed to their community.”
Alf Mosenye from Mogale City’s Art Calabash Project inspire these young artists by providing the Centre’s visitors with artistic training twice a week.
Dolly Mogepi, Thusong Centre’s project manager, tells the students were first introduced to clay work two years ago. Today Thusong’s art students can paint, draw and sculpt.
“We try to expose those with mental disabilities to as many different activities as possible. We are proud to know that many of these people are extremely good when working with their hands,” Dolly said.
You can view and even purchase the artworks at Mogale City Museum until the end of July. All the proceeds will go to Thusong Centre for the Mentally Disabled.
The exhibition will run until the end of July.
