The Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) held a media conference last Friday at OR Tambo International Airport, announcing the delay in their decision on the request for a metro on the West Rand.
Councillor Amanda de Lange, Freedom Front Plus West Rand regional leader said, “The Freedom Front Plus laid a complaint with the MDB for the non-compliance of the West Rand municipalities to meet the prescribed regulations and requirements of a category A metro status municipality.
“We also questioned the reason for conducting the media conference at OR Tambo International Airport and not locally where all stakeholders could attend.”
Jane Thupana, chairperson of the MDB said the application for the merger from Pravin Gordhan, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, was submitted too late. Thupana said the application needs to go through specific processes, similar to that of other demarcation proposals.
De Lange said the re-determination of municipal borders for Mogale City, Randfontein, Westonaria and Merafong City will have a huge impact on the outcome of the elections in 2016.
Residents who are opposed to the proposed metro can add their names to an online petition. Click on ‘Municipal Petitions’ in the menu bar and choose ‘West Rand Demarcation Petition’ from the dropdown menu.
The petition will be submitted to the MDB and Gordhan.
No comment about the metro merging, other than the public participation meeting, has been received from Mogale City Local Municipality.
