[VIDEOS] Packing meat is the road to stardom
Songs were sung, tears ran and awards were won at the annual Topstars Gauteng finals.
You know that guy that cuts your meat at the supermarket? He might just be a very talented performer.
Shoprite knows this, and that is why they host a national singing competition, called Topstars, each year for its employees.
This year’s Topstars celebrated ‘the gem inside’ with performances by 14 semi-finalists last Friday at Silverstar.
“This empowering competition uses singing as the tool for ordinary workers to be exposed to goal setting and empowerment. Topstars annually receives entries from most of their stores,” says Robyn Olivier, Topstars’ spokesperson. This was the project’s ninth year and was produced by Mynie Grové, renowned Music Business and TV Personality, and her AmaGroove Production Team.
“You are all unique and you all have a gem inside of you,” Mynie told the audience of performers and supporters.
Throughout the afternoon, one show-stopping performance was met with the next. At the end, there could only be one finalist representing Gauteng in Cape Town in October.
“Thabang from Silverton!”
The judges have decided, and out of the 14 contestants, Thabang was declared the best.
“I work at the meat section in Shoprite. My colleagues heard me singing one day and told me about the company’s annual singing competition,” Thabang said, gasping for air while clutching his trophy.
