As quiet as a mouse, a crafty suspected criminal picked a lock while nurses were sitting only metres away.
Wound-care specialist and stoma therapist Cindy Venter and her colleague were busy in her office in Human Street at around 4pm on 13 July when Venter suddenly heard something at the gate.
She quickly got up to investigate and found a man at the gate at the entrance. It is not unusual for strangers to come to the practice as they treat many state-hospital patients whose wounds had not been attended to properly.
“He said he was looking for the dentist,” said Venter, who thought nothing of it as people often ask for directions to other medical practices close to the hospital.
As the man left she noticed the gate being open, which was strange as the gate always is kept locked.
Immediately she checked the CCTV footage and made a shocking discovery.
The footage clearly showed the man walking up and down in front of the property. Next he was seen peeking into the reception area and when he saw the coast was clear, he picked the lock.
“He was so sneaky we did not hear a thing at first; he obviously is not a dumb thief,” she explained.
Venter has been renting the office space opposite the private hospital since 2013 and claimed this was not the first incident of its kind. She warns other businesses in the area to be very alert as this incident happened in broad daylight.
“The sad part is we try to help people who desperately need it and then someone off the street attempts to do harm to us …”
