Colin Steyn, the newly elected president said he wants to be a great leader.
Colin Steyn, the Krugersdorp Rotary Club’s newly elected president hopes to live by this years’ Rotarian international theme, Be a gift to the world.
Speaking to his fellow club members and guests at his recent induction, Colin, who has also been inducted as president on three different occasions in the past, said he will try his utmost best to lead the club to great things after taking over the reigns from Gerhard Human.
He specifically spoke about the club’s rich history of the past 75 years.
“The club was chartered in September 1940 and our first president was Breytie Breytenbach, a former Krugersdorp school principal and a lover of the arts.”
The stage in the old section of the Krugersdorp’s Town Hall bears his name and the Breytenbach Theatre in Pretoria was named in his memory.
Some of the well-established organisations in Krugersdorp such as the West Rand Association for the Physically Disabled (WRAPD), West Rand School, Golden Age Village are just some of the organisations the club has left its mark on since the very beginning and supported to this day.
“These just some of the services that we as members of this club have delivered over the years and I am sure 75 years from now we will still render a service to the community of Krugersdorp.”
A past president, Dr Dave Jankelowitz, was the emcee of the evening and said that Rotarians are living to their slogan which is Service above self.
Dennis Pretorius, also a past president, said he is proud to be part of about one million Rotarians who, although small in numbers, make a huge difference in their communities.
“In South Africa we always hear of all the negative things happening in our country but everyday we can also find good and positive stories.”
Dave also proposed a toast to the Rotarian Ann’s, the women members of the club who have several projects under their wing among other the upkeep of the Golden Age Village for the elderly.
