Mine dust woes continue
A new scraped road along a mine dump is upsetting residents.
A road has been scraped up a long-standing mine dump next to Tudor Shaft informal settlement, but no one knows why.
DA councillor De Waal Venter and the News went to investigate in the hope of finding some answers. But, aside from an informal lumberman, no one and nothing could be seen.
“Trucks go up the road and come back with sand, which they drive away,” the man said.
Venter believes this to be new mining activity where sand is collected and possibly used to make bricks.
“If they drive up and down this road, it needs to be sprayed with water to prevent the wind from blowing dust off the dump. But there is no sign of water trucks.”
Kabelo Mphake from Mintails told Venter Mintails are not mining in that area. Another company therefore must be responsible for the new road.
Venter is investigating this new activity.
A resident contacted the News and said if the dust becomes a problem again, she will have to move as she has given up trying to keep her home clean.
