The West Rand District Municipalities (WRDMs) welcome the decision of the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) on the decision made regarding a sustainable Metro Council.
According to a release by Refentse Mangope, mayoral spokesperson of the WRDM, the process has been very intense and democratic.
“We appreciate the intensive public participation and stakeholder engagements. We also acknowledge the active participation of all our communities in the country’s democratic processes. We hope the discussions for the establishment of a metro system will continue beyond the 2016 local government elections as the MDB has endorsed the metro in principle.”
“The merger of Randfontein and Westonaria will continue as part of our ongoing processes towards the establishment of a stronger, single and integrated municipality.
“So far Randfontein and Westonaria combined will have 35 wards, which means the newly established municipality will have 35 ward councillors and proportional representatives in line with the IEC guidelines,” Mangope said.
This process is part of the Gauteng Government’s vision to create a City Region with integrated socio-economic development through infrastructure investment and synergy.
