Born, bred and growing old in Krugersdorp

Wulff Gordon recently celebrated 92 years of life in Krugersdorp. Why do people decide to stay here?

The elders of Krugersdorp are testimonies to the charm of the town that keeps them here.

In 1923 Wulff Gordon was born in Luipaardsvlei and 92 years later, he still lives in this old mining town, turned bustling suburban hub.

Why?

“People are very friendly and helpful here. There is no place like Krugersdorp,” Wulff explained.

Both Wulff and his late wife of 70 years were born and raised here, with all four their children finishing school at Krugersdorp High School, Wulff’s alma mater. Both him and his son were the victor ludorums of their final school year.

After school, Wulff did his apprenticeship at a pharmacy where he was taught the tricks of the trade.

When World War Two broke out in 1939, Wulff signed up and was sent to Italy as a tank driver. But that was not the only time he traveled.

“We went around the world. But we always came back home.”

Even after seeing what the world has to offer, Wulff and his family decided to remain in Krugersdorp.

Wullf Gordon was the owner of Lewisham Pharmacy and he still has some of the bottles that he used at the pharmacy.

Wullf’s four children, 10 grandchildren and three-year-old great grandchild all came from Krugersdorp, while some are no longer living here.

“But I will always stay here.”

Wullf, his personal nurse Kleintjie Brink, and some close friends celebrated his birthday with a lunch at Garden World. Kleintjie told the News that he thoroughly enjoyed it.

Krugersdorp does have a certain flair about it. When you drive down Viljoen Street with the old trees covering the road on your way to either Key West Shopping Centre, Cradlestone Mall or Silverstar Casino, you may realise that there is indeed no place like Krugersdorp … or home.

Do you feel the same about our town as Wulff does? Will you grow old here? Tell us in the comments section below.
