CWP bridges the coaching divide

Soccer coaching clinics rope in community.

Mass participation has dropped drastically in Mogale City and because of that, the Community Works Programme (CWP) roped in sportspeople in a bid to develop and empower local people through soccer-coaching clinics.

CWP, which forms part of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) within the Ministry of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), hosted week-long coaching clinics around Mogale City’s urban and rural areas.

Joseph “Duku Duku” Makhanya, the former Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows midfield maestro, who assumed the role of coordinator and team leader throughout the clinics, said the coaching clinics are aimed at identifying talent and introducing the coaching team to the community of Mogale City.

The clinics were held under the auspices of the South African Football Association (Safa). Sixty local sportspeople attended the clinics and were taken through the grass-roots level coaching drills, which include football techniques and life skills.

“This is the beginners’ course and we took them through the basics of grass-roots coaching. The grass-roots are mainly the football techniques and life skills. After completion of the course coaches will able to work with school kids and junior teams,” Makhanya said.

The coaches were selected from the Kagiso-based CWP programme and after completing the course they are expected to either coach a school or a local team affiliated to the Mogale City Local Football Association.

The coaches were awarded the Safa-accredited D Level certificates at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Southern Africa in Kagiso Central. At the same venue, the Kagiso Football 4 Youth coaches were introduced as well.

The ceremony attracted sports luminaries from Mogale City Local Municipality, CWP management and Mogale City Local Football Association. Sonny Sathekge and Alfred “Shoes” Mfobo worked with Makhanya throughout the duration of the coaching clinics.
