‘Yes, I would drive through a red robot at night’
Krugersdorp feels it is unsafe to stop at a red traffic light in the middle of the night, but is it lawful?
It’s late at night and you are driving home alone. Do you stop at a red traffic light?
According to a poll on the Facebook group, Krugersdorp Network Community, many will not. But what does the law say?
Christo Peyper, the Democratic Alliance’s caucus leader in Mogale City, told the News it is, in fact, illegal to run a red light, no matter what time of day it is.
“It is unfortunately the law,” he said.
On Facebook, the News asked whether you would run a red traffic light late at night. The response was overwhelmingly “yes, I would.”
Cornelia Janse van Vuuren says she will first stop to see if it is safe, then continue to drive.
Immaculate Mokgoatlheng says she does not like it, but she does.
“It’s scary with all the hijackings and smash-and-grabs.”
Michelle Schutte agrees that she will not be a victim of crime.
