[VIDEO] Thousands of litres of water lost

Water coming from the Rangeview reservoir burst open a pipe and gushed downhill towards Noordheuwel.

A mass volume of water gushed from what seemed like a burst pipe that is connected to the Rangeview reservoir early this morning, leaving residents concerned about the fresh water going to waste.

Mogale City’s Water and Sanitation Department showed up in Bell Street, Rangeview, not long after the situation was reported by the community.

“It looks like the pipe bust, but not because of aging infrastructure because the pipe is not older than 10 years,” a member of Mogale City told the News while at the scene.

A piece of the blue PVC pipe gave the impression that it had indeed burst and was not tampered with. The force of the water burst open the ground covering the pipe, and allowed the water to stream down the hill. It even created a temporary waterfall.

Mogale’s employees closed two valves to isolate the pipe. After the pipe ran dry, renovations were underway.

A member of the community approached Mogale City members to inform them of another leakage about a kilometre away that has been running for months.

“We have informed the municipality, but no one ever came out.”

Mogale City said they will inspect the second leakage this morning.

According to Democratic Alliance ward councillor, Richard Lees, the amount of water lost this morning could amount to thousands of litres.

Mogale City workers are still in the process of digging out and fixing the pipe.
