Residents of Dublin Street are incensed after yet another car has crashed into the wall of a residential property along the notorious sharp bend in Dublin Street.
This time the damage is estimated at approximately R100 000.
“This is at least the fourth serious collision on this bend in the past five years,” DA ward councillor Lynn Pannall commented. She was attending the first meeting of the Dublin Street Action Group, which is determined to take on issues affecting Dublin Street residents. Top of the list is this high risk accident zone.
“Only damage to our properties has been caused in the past, but living adjacent to the dangerous right-angled bend concerns us as the next accident might cause injury to one of our family members or even worse,” Maralise Stander, a spokesperson for the group said.
“The prospect of injuries and fatalities has spurred residents to petition the municipality to assist in mitigating the problem,” said Steyn van Loggerenberg, whose house was damaged in one of the accidents.
33 residents have signed this petition.
Several requests to the municipality’s Roads Department to implement speed calming measures in the high risk zone in this street have fallen on deaf ears. The municipality only have placed chevrons, warning signs and solid white lines there.
“Admittedly it is a very problematic road, but something must be done. We all are up in arms and the Council needs to come to the party,” Pannall said.
The petition has been submitted to the municipality’s Petitions Committee.
The action group also will focus on crime connected to the overgrown wattles in the area, especially in the Kenmare Kloof.
