Pinehaven fly-over still a possibility?

The long-standing proposal to build a fly-over or cloverleaf interchange at the Pinehaven intersection is still on the table.

The resurfacing of the N14 highway is accompanied by various upgrades, among them the notorious Pinehaven intersection.

What are the plans for the intersection?

About eight years ago, a cloverleaf interchange was proposed as one of the options, but that was before Silverstar Casino was built. But instead of a cloverleaf interchange, traffic lights were put up at the intersection.

Then, before Cradlestone Mall was built, a fly-over was proposed to be built about 600 metres down the road towards Pretoria.

Today, plans for a cloverleaf interchange are still on the municipality’s table.

“The current status is that the company that was awarded the tender does not have the funds to complete the interchange at Pinehaven just yet,” Democratic Alliance ward councillor Jacques Hoon said.

“The cloverleaf interchange has been approved and the neighbouring properties have been bought and approved for development.”

Hoon added that such an interchange will help immensely with relieving traffic congestion at Pinehaven. He said the proposed interchange will mirror the one at Clearwater Mall. The bulk infrastructure such as water and waste treatment, however, is to be provided by Mogale City Local Municipality.

“A small waste plant can take about two years to build,” Hoon explained.
