Locals only awarded 11 per cent of tenders

A mere tenth of municipal tenders are awarded to locals, said the DA.

Only 11 per cent of Mogale City Local Municipality tenders were given to local residents, the rest were awarded to non-locals.

This was revealed when reports on the 2014/2015 financial year were tabled at the August council meeting.

Lawrence Shabalala, DA proportional representation (PR) councillor believes a local municipality should aim to improve local economy and raise its residents’ standard of living.

“Yet when it comes to action, the ANC-led municipality is found wanting.

“It is shameful that our people complain at every annual Integrated Development Plan community roadshow that only a few tenders are awarded to locals. They seek advice on how to succeed at securing tenders, but nothing ever changes and outsiders still benefit,” he said.

According to Shabalala, in response to a question posed by the DA at the council meeting, it was stated that the reason for this was “because our Mogale people don’t have knowledge of completing tender papers and need training”.

Shabalala commented, “The DA has a chance of winning Mogale City in the 2016 elections. It will provide opportunities for locals to compete with outside businesses for tenders. It will create an environment where local businesses and individuals can grow and benefit our local economy.”
