Council looking for solutions as heat wave wreaks havoc
More council meetings to follow after water shortage.

The recent heat wave that hit Gauteng left Krugersdorp with a water crisis that needs urgent sorting out.
“Mogale City has vowed to work around the clock to ameliorate heat wave-induced disruption of water supply in Kenmare, Noordeheuwel and surrounding areas as well as a small part of the Kagiso township,” Mogale City’s spokesperson, Nkosana Zali said.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure Services in Mogale City Local Municipality, councillor David Letsie convened an urgent meeting to look at concerns raised by residents regarding these disruptions. The meeting was attended by ward councillors of affected areas and the technical team dealing with the situation.
After the meeting, Mogale City decided upon and noted the following:
• Every time there is a heat wave, the demand for water consumption rises. The Kenmare Water Reservoir supplies three times a much water than it receives.
• The water levels were very low last week Monday but it improved drastically with a 30 percent increase in capacity after a new pipe was installed.
• Rand Water is affected by huge demand from its western customers, like West Rand municipalities and Rustenburg in the North West, and has to adjust its supply constantly to accommodate all.
“Again, we suggest that swimming pools not be filled or gardens irrigated in the interim while the matter is receiving attention,” he said.
The municipality and Rand Water will again meet this week to look at a long-term solution to this seemingly annual problem.
