Triple-crown win for local archer

A local archer won at the ABO national competition recently.

It may not be as popular as rugby or cricket, but archery holds its fare share of followers in Krugersdorp – and one of them is a triple-crown champion.

A triple-crown win is when an archer wins all three legs of the African Bowhunting Organisation (ABO) national competition. A local archer at the West Rand Archery Club, Herbert Maier managed to win the crown as well as the second place at the national ABO championship.

He also has manged to win the same accolades in 2012 as well as gold at national level.

“I have been shooting for 15 years and I am totally hooked,” Herbert admitted.

Out of the 340 competitors, Herbert managed to defy his nerves and shoot the winning arrow. According to him everyone wanted to win and that made the competition very tough.

The two-time world champion said archery is an individualistic sport where you constantly are competing against yourself to become better.

As Herbert pulled back a modern compound bow that could set you back about R13 000, with the stabiliser ensuring a straight line in front of him, he said even though archery teaches you discipline, the main objective is always about hitting the bullseye.

The arrow, that can travel up to 100 metres per second, leaves the bow at Herbert’s command and sinks into the rubber target.

“If you like target shooting, hunting or any type of aim-and-shoot sport, you will enjoy archery,” he said.
