Housing being used as a canvassing tool?

No action has been taken in terms of building houses on this vacant land.

The people of Munsieville Extension 5 are waiting in vain for their housing problems to be solved.

In one of the IDP (Integrated Development Programme) information meetings held recently in Munsieville, the former Human Settlement and Rural Development Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) David Letsie pointed out that the Mogale City Local Municipality had tried several times to get the MEC of Housing in the Provincial Government to visit the site without success.

“In other words, the Housing Department of the Gauteng Provincial Government is failing people of Munsieville,” commented DA councillor Victor Mhlari, resident of Munsieville.

Many community members in Extension 5 have been on the RDP housing list for years, without result.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura was in Mamelodi recently where he addressed that community. He advised them that those who can afford to build houses themselves could come forward and ask for land. The municipality would provide them with stands on which to build their houses.

Mhlari said, “I support the Premier in this. Take Munsieville Extension 5 for instance. If the municipality provided stands in the area and allocated people, I would like to believe that half the problem would be solved. People will build for themselves. The Premier has spoken, let the municipality now act.”

The Extension 5 issue was raised again during Makhura’s recent visit in Munsieville. Unfortunately no action has been taken in terms of building houses on this vacant land.

Mhlari said, “Let’s hope this is not a well-calculated strategic tool to be used as a canvassing method by the ruling party. In the run up to the elections, we will start seeing some action aimed to drum up votes in the upcoming local government elections.”
