Spreading good through the neighbourhood
At the launch, Mogale City ward councillor Mathapelo Agondo came to witness the inspirational work done by friends.
A group of friends noticed that after splurging on consumables every weekend, their neighbours, whom they saw and spoke to every day, did not have food or proper clothes.
Four months before the festivity period, when they saw this need in the community, they decided to collect clothes and food items for their needy neighbours. This grew into a locally acclaimed non-profit organisation called Loyal Members of Baagi Ba Mogale, which has become a beacon of hope for the needy in Mogale City. The Baagi ba Mogale, loosely meaning Mogale neighbours, Facebook page boasts about 39 employed and unemployed members.
Prior to its launch on 14 November at the first beneficiary in Kagiso, the group met several times to plan and collect items for donations. The group’s spokesperson Vuyo Jubasi said, “The picture changes when we recognise that even though we differ in so many ways, there is a sense in which we are all the same. Our needs and expectations are often equal, but the resources to meet those expectations often are not equal.”
Therefore the group decided, “We have been mandated by our Creator to ‘love they neighbour as thyself’ and ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you’.”
At the launch, Mogale City ward councillor Mathapelo Agondo came to witness the inspirational work done by friends and applauded the group for adopting the needy people within the community.
“I applaud the group for a great job. It is our responsibility not only as government but as the community to take initiative and help those in need within the community,” she said.
The group works closely with FoodBank SA (Krugersdorp branch) and through their relationship the donations are growing. The first beneficiary was the 12-member Letoaba family. They received a television stand, double bed, 54cm television and bulk food parcels that included vegetables, samp, canned food, maize meal and so on.
