Why did Zuma decide to fire Nene?

Krugersdorpers say what they think the reason was behind our President's actions.

President Jacob Zuma has kicked the finance minster out of the portfolio.

An immediate result of that is the rand crashing against the Dollar on Wednesday night after President Jacob Zuma fired Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene and appointed a relatively unknown, David van Rooyen in the key portfolio, Business Day Live (BDL) reported this morning.

Van Rooyen was once the mayor of Merafong Municipality on the West Rand.

The News asked Krugersdorpers’ opinion in an online pole on Facebook about what they though the reason for this was, and it seems people are reacting negatively to Zuma’s decision.

Erika du Toit-Corbitt said the decision was “just as pathetic as the example he sets as this country’s leader.”

“I think Nene made too much noise for Zuma’s liking,” she added.

BDL added that the government is pushing for a ‘nuclear deal’ that could cost trillions of rand, even though the government revenue is dwindling and public debt spiraling. The Treasury is believed to be one of the few entities that have raised questions about the affordability of such a programme.

Mpho Mamaila thought, jokingly, that Nene probably did not buy Zuma a Christmas present while Juliana Nortje agrees with Du Toit-Corbitt that Nene was against something Zuma wanted and that it was time for a new person that might not say no as easily.

The Leader of the Democratic Alliance, Mmusi Maimane, said that Zuma’s actions last night was yet another example of how President Zuma puts himself first and the country second.
