Everyone can get a Smart ID

The Smart Card is no longer only for elderly and those who lost their green ID books.

It seems that Mogale City residents can now also pick up their new Identification Document (ID) smart card at the Mogale City Department of Home Affairs in Commissioner Street.

According to a Home Affairs employee, you can buy the Smart ID for R140 and bring along your green ID. Children applying for their first ID and elderly residents who are 60 years and older, get the Smart ID for free.

“The child simply needs a parent and their ID and their birth certificate,” he said.

On 7 December the talk radio station, 702, reported that previously, smart IDs were only issued to the elderly and people who had lost ID books.

Home Affairs Gauteng head Albert Matsaung said the department is “opening up for Gauteng province for the application of the Smart [ID] card. We have offices we have dedicated to smart cards, which the public can use.”

The card, according to the department employee, is not so easy to replicate as the green ID. The photo is completely part of the card and cannot be removed or a new one cannot be added like fraudsters used to do.
