Debaters made name at nationals

Pupils from Hoërskool Jan de Klerk set the bar high at the National Debating Championships.

Hoërskool Jan de Klerk made an everlasting impression at the Botswana National Debating Championships where five of its pupils represented in the provincial team.

Thandekile Ndlovu, Aniki Matse, Khanyisile Molefe, Kelebogile Diale and Miracle Shingane were part of the Gauteng debating delegation that conquered the national championships.

Two weeks of intense training prior to the competition saw to their victory. Jan de Klerk was one of only two schools that had five speakers in the provincial team.

Thandekile was part of the Gauteng Junior Team, which later was crowned champion in Botswana.

Khanyisile and Kelebogile were ranked third and sixth respectively in the top 10 Best Speakers category.

“Their amazing performance was crowned by being invited to the nationals trials,” Marinda Steyn, the school’s media relations manager said.

In Botswana, Thandekile kept the school’s flag flying high. She was the best speaker in two of the three debates in which she participated.

“Jan de Klerk now is renowned for producing provincial and national debaters. They are indeed the cream of the crop,” she said.
