Still no funds handed over to sufferer after fundraiser

Months after funds were raised for little Reuben, he still has not received any of it from a non profit organisation.

Five-year-old Reuben Duvenhage has a lot on his plate. He is in Grade One this year and suffers from Type 1 Diabetes, which makes going to school very difficult.

Reuben has to deal with symptoms of immense thirst, sleeplessness and weight loss as “his immune system destroys the cells in his pancreas that produces insulin,” his father, Carl Duvenhage, said.

Lairiane Duvenhage, Reuben’s mother, said that if a school doesn’t have a policy which allows them to inject little Reuben, he is not able to attend that school.

“Reuben needs regular injections on a daily basis,” she said.

One of the parents of twins that Lairiane teaches at a local creche, Amelia Van Rhyneveld started a campaign for Reuben in support of his medical costs in July last year.

“I lost a child last year. I do not wish for Lairiane to experience the same thing,” Amelia said.

Amelia decided to help the Duvenhage’s with a Denim Day drive throughout the Krugersdorp area.

Denim Day is based on the project that a non-profit organisation started to raise awareness for Diabetes. They sell R10 stickers in exchange for wearing jeans to work. Amelia will sell Denim Day stickers on 24 July in support of Reuben and the organisation’s initiative.

R5 would have gone to the organisation and the remaining R5 towards Reuben.

“But since our last encounter we raised funds for Reuben with the organisation, but till today with numerous follow ups with them we still did not receive any funds from them. We raised the funds and gave it to them. We would have heard what percentage would be returned to Reuben,” Amelia said.

The News urgently contacted the organisation via telephone and email about Reuben’s funding, but to no avail. The News will continue to pursue them for comment and once any form of feedback has been received, it will be published.
