No power or water result of lightning storm

Krugersdorp has once again felt the full force of a storm when the town was left without power and some areas without water after transformers were struck by lightning.

Krugersdorp is faced with yet another emergency situation after a lightning storm hit the town on Valentine’s Day yesterday, 14 February.

“Last night, lightning hit three Eskom Transformers,” Mogale City Local Municipality spokesperson, Nkosana Zali, said.

Thus parts of town were left without power since last night. This morning, one of the three transformers had been fixed.

“But [Mogale City] requires at least two [transformers] to get enough supply capacity for the city,” he explained.

It also appears that the high lying eastern areas of Krugersdorp like Rangeview, Mindalore, Noordheuwel, Kenmare and Breaunanda are now also without water. This is possibly due to the electrical pumps not working at the reservoirs.

Althought it is unconfirmed, the News was made aware by trusted sources that certain areas could be without power for two days.

“We are working on the problem. Some areas will have power restored earlier than others,” Zali said.

Amanda de Lange, leader of the Freedom Front Plus for Mogale City forwarded a statement to the News stating that the municipality will be conducting load shedding in some of the areas as a result of the damaged caused to the transformers.

“The situation is being monitored and residents are asked to use water sparingly since the water pump stations are affected by this. Some areas will experience low pressure,” De Lange’s statement reads.

As for early morning traffic, Voortrekker Road is heavily congested and Papi Motaung, Mogale City Traffic spokesperson, advised that motorists try and avoid the road.

“Most of the traffic lights are not working and causing an up to 30 minute delay,” he said.

Readers also contacted the News, furious about the municipality’s unanswered calls.
