Roads repaired and rehabilitated
The bumpy ride is over as 30 kilometres of road receive a makeover.
Recently the roads in the Krugersdorp’s Central Business District (CBD) have undergone a face-lift with new tar being laid to repair and replace the old and dried-out surface.
The Krugersdorp area has around 1 200 kilometres of tar and gravel roads.
The News spoke to some of the engineers from the Mogale City Local Municipality Roads Department and heard that with a limited budget, the municipality was able to redo a total of 30 kilometres of roads within this financial year that ends in June.
The roads that were redone are in the Factoria, Krugersdorp CBD and Kagiso areas.
Each kilometre of new tar costs the municipality approximately R1,5 million, depending on the type of surface needed.
The Factoria repairs have been completed, while in the CBD it is in progress. Kagiso will be next.
This is the first time in almost 15 years that repairs are done in the CBD.
The Roads Department has what they call a Pavement Management System (PMS) whereby the condition of the roads is evaluated every three years to determine if and where emergency repairs are required.

When a pothole appears on the road, it usually indicates that the section of the road already is damaged badly and deteriorating.
Road damage or potholes occur for various reasons, which include illegal dumping or littering in the drainage systems alongside the road.
When these systems are blocked, storm water gushes down the roads and eventually contributes to the deterioration of the roads and the formation of potholes.
As much as the responsibility for road maintenance lies with the municipality, it also lies with the community who can report potholes and damaged roads to the Roads Department on 011 951 2103.
