Sunday afternoon turns into burning chaos
The fire department extinguished the fire that burnt the roof of the lapa.
A family get together soon turned dangerous when the thatched lapa caught alight in Papegaai Street in Rant-en-Dal.
The fire broke out on Sunday afternoon, 20 March, and local fire fighters believe it was caused due to a crack in the chimney which allowed fire to escape and start to burn the thatched roof.
A family member told the News that as soon as every one realised the roof was alight, they got hold of the hose pipe and tried to extinguish the fire. The smoke however, covered the area and Sector 3’s Community Policing Forum members along with the West Rand District Fire Department were on the scene.
“The fire department reacted very quickly,” a sector member informed the News.
The fire did not spread to other parts of the home and no serious damage was caused other than the burnt roof.
No one was injured and no foul play is suspected. A police vehicle did however also appear at the scene.
