Easter poll: roads a big concern

One of the most important Christian holidays is here and celebrating has already begun with Easter egg hunts and special church services, but residents are concerned about dangerous roads.

Residents say whether they will stay at home or travel this Easter, dangerous roads are a concern.

Some have left home for the week and others will remain at home. Krugersdorpers weigh in on, through a poll on Facebook, what their ideal Easter looks like and most prefer it to be away from the roads.

Some families are excited to celebrated Easter with one another. A few residents said they would rather not drive at this time and plan on spending time at home with their families.

Lizette van der Merwe said she will attend an Easter conference hosted by From the Heart church. Like Lizette, Niekie Bushby said that she will celebrate “what Easter really is about – Jesus”.

Many more residents said they will either attend a church conference, service or camp. Others will simply spend time with the family either at home or somewhere recreational. But a constant response was that of a fear of driving on South Africa’s busy roads. Hennie van Zyl commented that “Easter weekend and our roads are not the best of friends”.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has deployed its own traffic officers to join officials from other agencies as they try to reduce road deaths, Eye Witness News (EWN) reported.

EWN added that the corporation’s Simon Zwane said the fact that the long weekend also coincides with payday, is even more worrying.

Whether you are staying at home or travelling this Easter, the News wishes its readers a happy weekend.
