The calf, named Winston, is now up for adoption, but Fora manager Linda Scrace said Winston will need to be taken good care of. He is already quite used to having people around him and is still young enough to tame.
Here are a few quick facts about Brahman bulls:
• The bull is a meat-providing animal and the cows are also not major milk producers, therefore they are either used to breed or also for meat
• They have a stubborn temperament and can’t easily be tamed, except if they are exposed to people from infancy
• They can easily jump a fence
• They kick sideways and not backwards, therefore a sideways kick is also known as a cow kick
• They eat mainly veld grass and keep a good diet if the grass is of good variety
• The breed originated in America and the first group arrived in Cape Town during the early 20th century
• The Brahman Cattle Breeders Society of South Africa strives towards improving the breed
• Currently the society had 572 members with more than 60 000 enrolled animals
• Studies at the University of Missouri found that they can tolerate high temperatures and are widespread in tropical regions
• Their thick skin helps them to resist insects
• Brahman cattle live longer than other breeds
