Voortrekker leak still flowing

A local ward councillor has taken pen to paper to address the water issues plaguing Kenmare.

Local ward councillor, Annette Fourie, has requested a meeting with municipal officials, the MMC of Water and Sanitation and residents affected by the ongoing water supply issues in Kenmare.

She also wants to discuss the continuous stream flowing down Voortrekker Road that was fixed by unknown workers recently.

Fourie said in her letter to Mogale City Local Municipality’s Mayor, Koketso Calvin Seerane, that among other recurring water cuts in certain roads, the water leak on Voortrekker Road needs to be tended to.

“The submersible pump between Voortrekker Road and the service road is a problem. Water is flowing down the road and it has been flowing for many years,” she said.

The News previously reported on Tuesday (29 March), that contract workers “replaced” the pump, which is situated a few metres below ground. The manhole cover was opened and various instruments were suspended above the pump inside the manhole. Fourie said she had also witnessed activity at the pump but said the vehicles were unmarked and “apparently not from Mogale City”.

“Regrettably I could not get any answers as to who these people were and what were they doing at the site,” she said.

Even though the supposed contract workers spent time at the pump site, the leak seems to remain.

“The water is still flowing down Voortrekker Road, damaging the road,” Fourie added.

The DA ward councillor added that she has received phone calls as early as 3.30am about water that was abruptly cut off. The areas that are usually affected by water disruptions are Frederick Cooper Drive, Waterford Road, Clare Street, Mayo Street, Ardtully Street and Willoughby Street, all in Kenmare.

These sudden water cuts have also been plaguing residents for years.

“The ongoing problems now have to be solved as a matter of urgency,” her letter to the Mayor concluded.

On many occasions clean water flows directly from the pump station next to Voortrekker Road and at other times from the Kenmare reservoir down Shannon Road.
