Since it was first proposed in August 2013, Coronation Park is still undergoing a R22,6 million upgrade, costing the municipality R600 000 more than previously proposed.
In his State of the City Address (Soca), Mayor Koketso Calvin Seerane said the park “is currently undergoing a R22,6 million upgrade which will see the facility boasting a new perimeter fence, a museum, memorial site, gymnasium, picnic and restaurant facilities as well as playground facilities for children. Furthermore, there will be recreation facilities catering for rowing and fishing as the area around Coronation Dam will be made available for this purpose.”
In August 2013, the News reported that an aquatic centre was also proposed.
During his 2013 Soca, Seerane said the upgrade will cost R22 million and added that he wanted to be “upfront and make a humble appeal to the people of our city to be patient with the process of revamp because when it starts, possibly the doors to the facility will be shut. For us to provide a facility we can all be proud of, we need to give our team ample opportunity to do their best.”
Mogale City Local Municipality spokesperson, Nkosana Zali, said in February last year that the project will continue until 2018.
Coronation Park saw about 300 mainly white squatters removed from the premises legally in December 2014. This was one of the steps the municipality had to take to start the upgrade, which so far resulted in the re-fencing of the park.
