A new industrial area for Chamdor
Seventeen new plots are to be developed next to Chamdor.
Seventeen new industrial lots adjacent to the Chamdor industrial area were earmarked for development, ward councillor De Waal Venter said.
He told the News that the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (GDARD) had already done an environmental impact assessment (EIA) in the area.
“There will be a variety of shapes and sizes to cater for big and small businesses,” he said.
The Department, in its EIA, said the proposed industrial development will encourage economic growth and extend the existing services network.
“It will contribute to poverty eradication and employment opportunities, and could therefore be regarded as directly in line with the objectives of Mogale City’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP),” according to the EIA report.
The Department warned that because of reclamation by a brick manufacturing company, it is possible that, “Dust will be generated and other mining-related impacts will be experienced by adjacent landowners,” and “It is not clear how many years this activity of reclamation will take”.
Venter said it is a good sign that provision is made for future growth, “Especially in view of the current negative economic outlook”.
In the GDARG proposal, it is said that construction is not to start before environmental authorisation is granted.
No date for public participation on the matter has been set yet.
