Neighbours Gerrit Goosen and Michael Machabang are becoming restless after Goosen’s driveway was dug up in December and Machabang’s water meter subsequently buried.
Goosen told the News that an entire car could fit into the hole that was dug up by contractors who were trying to find the source of a water leak that was reported earlier. The leak, next to Goosen’s driveway, was eventually repaired.
“They dug up all the bricks of my driveway on 23 December and closed the hole two days later. Unfortunately, they buried most of the driveway bricks as well,” he said.
Goosen said he was quoted about R9 000 to relay his driveway bricks.
“The bricks can no longer be made like the originals. I would have to redo the entire driveway,” he said.
Both residents were told by Mogale City Local Municipality representatives that the contractors would return early the next year (2016) to deal with the matter.
“But after numerous talk with councillors and the municipality, we haven’t made much progress,” Goosen and Michael agreed.
The Ward councillor, Jacque Hoon, told the News that he was aware of the situation and that he was in contact with the municipality.
The News understands that the Department of Water and Sanitation is battling with contractors that allegedly fail to complete projects and that situations like the one the Rant-en-Dal’s neighbours find themselves in are not unique.
Mogale City’s spokesperson, Nkosana Zali, has not commented on the matter.
