Loads of cupcakes … but for a good cause

UniCollege's students distributed home-baked cupcakes to create awareness of early childhood cancer.

By baking and distributing colourful cupcakes to help raise awareness of childhood cancer, 14 UniCollege students became Cupcake Angels for a day.

Cupcake Angels is part of Cupcakes of Hope, a non-profit organisation that aims to create awareness of the early signs of childhood cancer and to raise funds to support families that have been affected by childhood cancer.

Natalie Franklin, UniCollege Marketing Manager, told the News that each UniCollege business management student donated a dozen cupcakes and helped to hand them out to other students throughout the day.

A total of 198 cupcakes were baked and distributed among the students and pupils of UniHigh.

“The students were excited about the initiative,” Franklin said.

“Cancer affects everyone and children are so often overlooked when people talk about the disease,” she said.

UniCollege’s students understand that early cancer detection can lead to a better chance of survival and that chances are better if more people know what the symptoms are.

The initiative saw UniCollege and Cupcakes of Hope join hands in support of cancer awareness.

This was not the first time the organisation was involved with residents in Krugersdorp. In September last year, the Cupcake Angels took to Key West Shopping Centre and displayed an impressive 2 500 cupcakes for sale.

In 2014, 55 shopping centres across South Africa participated, raising R1,2 million. Last year 70 shopping centres nationwide, of which Key West was just one, participated in the event in support of children with cancer. An impressive R1,5 million was raised, of which R12 000 was made at Key West. One of these little edible artworks would have cost you R10 and created awareness of the early warning signs of cancer.
